Avoid Island Restoration

May 4 - May 10

We need your help to restore rainforests and rookeries on Avoid Island Nature Refuge!

WildMob and Reef Catchments are teaming up again to target invasive vegetation in critically endangered littoral rainforest, and plastics on turtle nesting beaches across several islands in the Cumberland Group.

We’ll be heading to Avoid Island Nature Refuge owned by friends of WildMob’s Queensland Trust for Nature’s (QTFN)

Avoid Island is home to one of Queensland’s largest Flatback turtle rookeries as well as critically endangered beach scrub rainforest, that with a little help, could be free of invasive vegetation and thrive again.

As well as removing and treating invasive vegetation we’ll also be targeting marine plastics accumulating on the islands beaches. Plastics circulating in our oceans are having devastating impacts on a wide range of marine species. Avoid Island is one of the biggest rookeries for Flatback turtles on the Queensland coast. QTFN, WildMob and Reef Catchments are all working together to ensure the island is in the best possible shape for Australia’s endemic Flatback Turtles.

If you’re ready for an adventure then come and join the mob while we explore and restore Avoid Island’s ecosystems.

What’s included
From stepping on board The Wild Cat in Mackay to stepping off again 6 days later we’ll take care of the catering, accommodation and working equipment. There’s a house and large canvas tents available to us on Avoid Island so accommodation is pretty comfortable!

Example Day
Wake early for a pre-breakfast stroll around the island admiring the local bird life. Then back to base for a hearty breakfast before heading out to tackle invasive vegetation including Mango trees (sad to see them go) and lantana. After lunch and a rest head out to explore the rock pools and sand flats at low tide or take a walk around the northern headland for a unique perspective only available when the tide is right!

The following equipment items are essential to ensure your safety, comfort and enjoyment of the program.

  • 1 large backpack – better than a suitcase as you will be required to carry your luggage at times.
  • 1 small backpack for daytime activities.
  • Sleeping bag
  • 1 or more pairs of long working shirts and trousers – to protect against scratches from plants, mosquito bites and the sun.

  • Warm clothes – it can get cold at night. A fleece, wind stopper or sweater is ideal.
  • 1 pair of walking boots, trainers or sneakers (strong soles)
  • 1 pair of CLOSED shoes with strong soles that can get wet. (sneakers or reef shoes made out of wetsuit material, available at stores such as K-Mart or BigW for approx $20, high ankles are best)
  • 1 pair of sandals, thongs or flip-flops
  • Towel
  • Personal medication & toiletries. Sunscreen (highest protection factor) and insect repellent– preferably biodegradable
  • Sunglasses
  • Hat – wide brimmed for plenty of shade
  • Personal drink bottle – total minimum 2 litres.

It’s not too hot in May, and for the work slow and steady wins the race.

There’s a house on the island, real shower and toilet. Tank water limits everyone to quick showers though!

Getting to Avoid Island Nature Refuge is a 6hr ocean voyage on the Wild Cat. Just getting there will be an adventure!

Getting there is an adventure, once on Avoid the work is meaningful and the island quiet, remote and relaxing. Perfect for those looking to escape the city, meet like minded people and do something that matters!
